Obituary for Dr. Richard Joseph Raoul Adelard Herman Marceau

MARCEAU, Dr. Richard J., PhD, P. Eng., - Passed away suddenly at his home in Conception Bay South, Nfld on Monday, September 26, 2016 at the age of 62 years. Leaving to remember him and celebrate his life is his best friend and loving wife Sheila, daughter Aude Marceau (fiancé Philippe Beauchemin) and son Hugues Marceau. Cherished son of Irene Marceau. Dear brother of Eric (Diane), Louise (Marc), Nicole (late Rick), Carole-Anne and David (Cissy). Predeceased by his father Bruno and brother Gilbert. Fondly remembered by Aude and Hugues’ mother Denyse Vézina. Dearly missed by his four cats. Richard leaves behind a wide circle of colleagues and friends at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and in the academic and engineering communities across Canada. Richard was born and raised in North Bay, Ontario. After graduating from McGill University in 1977, he began his career as an electric power engineer most notably with Hydro-Québec, and later moved into research and planning with Hydro-Québec's Research Institute. After twelve years in the industry, he returned to McGill for a PhD in electric energy transmission. Upon graduation in 1993, he began his career in academia when he joined in the Electrical Engineering Department at École Polytechnique de Montréal, where he later served as Chair. In 2001, he became Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of the Université de Sherbrooke, and in 2005, he was appointed Provost and Vice-President Academic of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. In 2013, he and Sheila moved East to join Memorial University of Newfoundland as Vice-President (Research). In that senior role, he led a number of strategic initiatives to advance the university's research capacity, productivity and profile. Richard was also the author of several books on national energy strategies and The Canadian University Business Primer. Richard was also the President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering for 2 terms and was Chair of the Board of The Parkwood Foundation for many years. The family will receive friends at the Weaver Family Funeral Home - Campbellford, 77 Second Street, Campbellford, ON on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 from 10:00 AM until 1:30 PM with the Service to follow in the Chapel at 1:30 PM.
